Custom England golf vacations
Top-tier depth and versatility makes England one of the most exciting golf destinations in the world.
While few golf trips extend to fifteen courses, Mr. Doak’s point stands as to the breadth and depth of golf in England. There is great variety in the settings as well, with excellent courses ranging from the far northeast (Goswick) to the far southwest (St Enodoc).
The healthland courses throughout Surrey and within 90 minutes of London include some of the very best in the world, such as Sunningdale (Old and New), St George’s Hill (Red and Blue), Walton Heath (Old and New), the 3 Ws, and about a dozen more. The Addington bears a special mention as the restoration project there under the guidance of architects Clayton, DeVries, and Pont has been turning the course into a special setting (ask the Professional to see the before and after shots when you check in). Being able to do all of this within striking distance of one of the world’s truly great cities—and international flight hubs—is a rare treat for a travelling golfer.
“Australia enjoys better weather, but for a long trip with the chance to play fifteen or more courses, England would be my first choice as a golfing destination.”
The other dimension of English golf is their top tier links golf. Royal St George’s Golf Club is typically ranked #1 in the country, with its neighbours Royal Cinque Ports and Prince’s also at home on any itinerary. In the northwest, Open Championship hosts Royal Lytham & St Annes, Royal Birkdale, and Royal Liverpool dominate in notoriety, but there is an entire next tier of courses that become difficult to choose from and separate.
England—and London in particular—is often seen as the layover en route to a world-class golf trip, but too often overlooked as the destination.
